Our Approach

Our dual approach – building community power while supporting health workers – creates lasting change that transforms both how services are delivered and how communities engage with the health system.

Namati's health advocates (defensores de saúde) are the heart of our work. Rooted in their communities, they're trained in health policy, rights, mediation, and grassroots organizing. They equip people with the knowledge and confidence to speak up and push for change. They work in partnership with healthcare providers, identifying practical solutions to barriers to care that would otherwise go unaddressed. When local resolution isn't possible, health advocates escalate — refusing to accept injustice as inevitable.

Our Theory of Change

Change on paper isn't enough; top-down healthcare reforms often fail to create durable improvements. Namati's theory of change is grounded in a community-led approach that empowers people to understand their rights, demand better care, and reshape health systems. This hands-on engagement reveals how policies actually work in practice and generates evidence to improve them further.

How We Create Change

When communities can safely voice concerns and health workers see themselves as partners in change, the entire dynamic shifts. Patients become active participants in their healthcare, providers become quality champions, and systems become truly accountable to the people they serve. This creates a continuous cycle of improvement, with communities at the center of lasting systemic change.

“Our hospital used to be infamous for bribery and illegal fees. In the past health workers didn’t really regard patients as individuals with rights. They acted as though they were doing patients a favor. But we’ve seen a huge change. Health workers now know that bribery isn’t accepted here.”
